Biography

Professor Gilberto Leung is Tsang Wing-Hing Professor in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He graduated from the University of London with M.B.B.S. in 1992. He completed postgraduate training with the Hallett Gold Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the J. Douglas Miller Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He joined HKU in 2005 where he obtained his MS, PhD, and MD degrees.

He is currently Director of the School of Clinical Medicine and Convenor of the Clinical Neuroscience Consortium at HKU; Immediate Past President and Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine; and Convenor of the Institute for Medical Advancement and Clinical Excellence (IMACE)—an independent professional platform established by The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China to develop clinical practice guidelines specific to this locality.

He also holds an LLB from the University of London and an LLM in Medical Law and Ethics with Distinction from the University of Edinburgh. He is Co-Director of the Centre for Medical Ethics and Law at HKU and Chairperson of the Clinical Ethics Committee at Queen Mary Hospital, where he practises as Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon.

His research interests include endoscopic neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, and medical law and ethics, having published 231 peer-reviewed journal articles, three monographs, and 13 book chapters.
